Stabbing murder trial begins

A Florida woman charged with a murder charge after she pulled a gun on her estranged husband and then stabbed him in the neck to death testified in court Wednesday night in the murder trial of a man accused of beating and strangling his wife.

Sylvia DeLeon-Shackelford, 43, faces two counts of voluntary manslaughter, according to the Pensacola News Journal. She faces up to life in prison if convicted.

DeLeon-Shackelford was seen inside the Seminole County Courthouse on Wednesday.

Shackelford, 44, went to his fiancee's house in June of 2013 to get money for a wedding. He arrived and discovered his fiancee standing in front of the back door.

DeLeon-Shackelford told the judge she had called to the house and called his name before shooting him to death.

Prosecutors were questioning the witness at Tuesday's hearing as her defense attorney said DeLeon-Shackelford was intoxicated at the time. A lawyer for DeLeon-Shackelford did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Devin DeLeon was arrested the next day in connection with the murder.

Investigators believe that two days later, DeLeon-Shackelford called his mother to ask for his mother to come back to the home. Prosecutors said she failed to show up and DeLeon-Shackelford tried to kill himself.

"She was crying the whole time. I'm sure they all went crazy, so we went in there and tried to talk to them," said the lawyer, who is standing at the front of the courtroom.

After the two days went by, DeLeon-Shackelford's mother tried to call her but it ran out of phone service. The call then returned with a male voice saying, "Why would I call your mother?" before the man who identified himself as his ex-girlfriend replied, "I don't know. You don't have to call your mother, she's in jail now."

"She was crying and yelling at me, 'Why wouldn't you do it? Why would you tell me why that's what I should do?'" said the man who identified himself as the girlfriend.

She said she was having nightmares for a couple of days after the attack.

Dpp seeks appeal on johnston decision on appeal by aldermen

Alderman Scott Dpp and two fellow Aldermen are asking the court to hear oral arguments in a case challenging whether Johnston's public comment rule covers private speakers.

The court in January rejected three of the appeals filed by Johnston on the same issue. The panel said the public comments laws that apply to all political parties are as written.

Johnston's attorney, James Stinson, said that case is a distraction from the "serious issue of transparency and accountability" at the City Hall and said his client is committed to working with others to ensure the public can learn more about City Hall.

"The Aldermen have long advocated transparency and transparency to the public and have worked with our elected officials and officials in other offices to do the same," Stinson said. "The Aldermen will continue to fight for transparency for all of our City Hall staff and the public, as well as for city officials and the public. All of the comments made by our Aldermen and City Commissioners were made in the course of their public duties."

Stinson said Johnston has never filed any comments on the proposed ordinance. The City Attorney's Office had previously said Johnston and Johnston, who works in public relations, did not engage in private communications with the city's general counsel, attorney, the city's legal department and city lawyers before the city's April 10 primary election that Johnston became Aldermen.

In his latest legal challenge, Stinson has asked the court to issue a temporary restraining order against Johnston's comments to the media, a preliminary injunction if necessary. The order comes on the same day the council also voted 3-2 to ask the Pennsylvania State Ethics Commission to review the Johnston comments.

He has asked the court to block citywide implementation of Johnston's proposed ordinance and have the court enjoin the city from enforcing it on other public comments until the lawsuit is finished.

Alderman Ed Reitzen, D-New Kensington, was absent from Monday's council meeting. Johnston is a retired attorney who has said he does not plan to seek re-election because he "can't deal with the noise and mud." He said he is currently traveling but expects to be back by the summer.
